County receives federal Community Development Block Grant on behalf of Plymouth Water District
Posted on Monday September 18, 2017

About the Project

In May 2017, on behalf of the Plymouth Water District, Benton County, assisted by Gray & Osborne of Yakima, applied for federal CDBG funds to drill a new well, providing safe drinking water to the Plymouth community. Plymouth currently draws its drinking water from a well drilled in 1922, located near a railroad track.

Each spring, nitrate levels in the community well rise, jeopardizing the health of infants and pregnant women. At these levels, Plymouth residents must turn to bottled water, and the only employee of the Plymouth Water District is tasked with acquiring the bottles – 1.5 gallons per person, per day. At approximately 220 residents, this means that the district spends about $27,000 per summer on bottled water, significantly cutting into their annual budget of around $98,000.

The new well will provide the Plymouth community with safe, fresh drinking water for many years to come and is anticipated for completion by November 2018.

The CDBG funds will significantly assist the Plymouth Water District with completion of this project, which has a total project cost of approximately $1.4 million. Funding not provided by the federal CDBG will be provided by other State funds. Benton County will administer the grant to Plymouth Water District and is currently working with the district to put an agreement in place to do so.
